The Rise of Blockchain Gaming in Asia: Krafton’s New Video Game to Compete with Roblox

Krafton, the South Korean game developer known for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), is set to challenge Roblox with its upcoming product, according to The Korea Economic Daily (KED).

The new video game, Overdare (formerly Project Migaloo), is being developed in collaboration with Naver Z, a metaverse unit of South Korean internet conglomerate Naver Corp. Overdare will be a mobile-based user-generated content (UGC) platform, aiming to compete with popular building video games like The Sandbox and Roblox.

Overdare will utilize Unreal Engine 5 and generative artificial intelligence, although specific details about the AI component have not been disclosed. The game will allow players to personalize their digital avatars and communicate with friends.

According to reports, Overdare will be built on the Settlus blockchain network. This blockchain will enable the creation of an in-game economy based on NFTs, following the “create-to-earn” model.

As of now, neither Krafton nor Naver Z have made a public announcement regarding the game. However, Krafton plans to reveal more information about Overdare in December 2023.

In March 2022, Krafton signed a partnership with Solana to release products on the network. Although Solana Labs was supposed to assist Krafton with game layout and marketing, the South Korean developer has decided not to utilize Solana for this upcoming project.
